It's Called Patina
The green layer that forms on copper is called patina. It's not rust, and it's not damage. Patina is the result of copper reacting with elements in its environment over time — primarily oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide in the air.
The process happens in stages. Fresh copper starts out with that familiar warm, reddish-orange color. Over time it darkens to a deeper brown, and eventually — given enough exposure to moisture and air — it develops the distinctive blue-green patina most people recognize.
The Science Behind It
When copper is exposed to air, it first reacts with oxygen to form copper oxide, which gives it that darker, brownish tone. With continued exposure to moisture and carbon dioxide, this further transforms into copper carbonate — the blue-green compound that makes up patina.

Is Patina a Problem?
Not at all. In fact, patina is often considered a feature rather than a flaw. Here's why:

The speed of patina formation depends on the environment. Copper in humid, coastal, or polluted environments will develop patina faster than copper kept in dry, indoor conditions. A copper roof in a rainy climate might show significant patina within a few years, while a copper piece kept indoors and regularly polished may stay bright for decades.

On jewelry, patina can sometimes transfer to skin, leaving a temporary green mark. This is completely harmless — it's just the copper reacting with the natural acids and moisture on your skin. It washes off easily and is not a sign of low quality or an allergic reaction in most cases.
